Students interested in practicing safe sex had an opportunity to learn how to use condoms and other safety measures at the Latex Luau in the Cook Campus Center.
The event, hosted by the Cook College Program Activities Council on March 11, helped raise students' sexual awareness through games and sex toys.
PAC members gave condoms to all the attendees to help promote safety.
Many students appreciated the free gifts. David Porter, a Cook College sophomore, said because of the free condoms, "[students] will use a condom more often, as opposed to if they stayed home," where they may not have access to condoms.
The event also had safe sex themed games such as a "put the condom on the cucumber" race. The point of the game was to show how to put on a condom properly since it is often used incorrectly.
"It's good to know how to [put on a condom] so that you avoid pregnancies and illness," Cook College first-year student Maggie Lillo said.
At the event, students also learned about the consequences of not practicing safe sex.
The Planned Parenthood organization attended the event to explain students do have a choice in case their sexual activity produces unanticipated results.
Sunoak Sul, a Douglass College sophomore and member of RU Choice, said, "We're trying to bring awareness through events like this, tabling and through our meetings and things. We're trying to raise awareness at Rutgers because sexual health is really important."
Cook College first-year student Fred Lozy said, "College students, especially coming out of high school, learn that abstinence is the only way. When you're in college, you're experiencing more things, especially when you're away from your parents."
"When you go to college, you learn about other safe ways to have sex and that abstinence isn't the only way," he said.
