For reasons that remain unknown, the heart and soul of the Rutgers women's basketball team will not be a part of the team during the fall semester.

Senior guard Cappie Pondexter, a two-time All-Big East Team member, issued a statement through the University Friday afternoon, in which she did not explain the circumstances behind the reason for her absence from the team for the duration of the Fall 2004 semester.

"I can assure you that it is not a life-threatening condition or a substance abuse issue," Pondexter said in the statement. "This is a personal matter, and I would appreciate it if people will accept and respect that. I look forward to rejoining my teammates for the second half of the season."

Pondexter led the Knights in multiple offensive categories last season, including points per game (17.9) and assists per game (4.3). Her efforts helped her garner Third Team All-American honors from The Associated Press.

Pondexter has refused to let any University officials, including women's basketball head coach C. Vivian Stringer, speak on her behalf about her decision.
