For several semesters now, the Rutgers College Program Council has done a good job representing the interests of varied students and in providing for varied musical tastes. Concerts featured Trey Songz and Gavin DeGraw, the Beatnuts and Death Cab for Cutie. Toying with this formula might throw that representation out of whack, which would be unfortunate. Programming is varied and we hope it will stay that way or increase further. Students are paying for this programming and therefore the options should be diverse.
In the past, RCPC has done a decent job with offering programs by providing rap and hip hop artists such as Kanye West, Ludacris, Method Man and Redman. These types of artists are favorable to all different groups of students. It's unfair to say this music is solely enjoyed by Hispanic and black students. Instead, all groups should include all students in the decisions on what to provide. It is good to devote programming specifically to these communities, but it is also good to recognize concerts are not only inclusive of blacks and Hispanics, but of the general public as well. All the different types of activities provided are for everyone to enjoy.
A lot of the smaller groups offering entertainment obviously have their communities in mind, such as when the United Black Council sponsored a CeCe Winans concert. However these groups often find themselves catering to these thousands of black and Hispanic students with a smaller budget, at least a budget smaller than RCPC's. It would be great if those groups could receive as much funding as RCPC does to provide more options to these students.
