New Jersey residents who have always wanted the chance to drive a BMW are in luck. Between April 26 and June 4, citizens will have a chance to take part in a nationwide effort to raise money and awareness about breast cancer during the 11th annual BMW Ultimate Drive Supporting Susan G. Komen for the Cure. To raise funds for the organization, two fleets of volunteer-driven BMW vehicles will be stopping at 237 dealerships across the country for the event, which lasts until October.
Anyone who is interested and has a valid driver's license can come to one of the participating New Jersey BMW dealerships and volunteer to participate in the event. For each mile every volunteer drives, BMW will donate one dollar to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, formerly known as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
"We pledge to donate one million dollars," said BMW spokeswoman Amy Quarmby from the company's corporate headquarters. "Over the past ten years we have donated $10 million and would like to add another million this year."
BMW is also selling a line of merchandise from its Pink Ribbon Collection, with 22 to 25 percent of the gross profits to be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
The volunteer drivers will have a chance to drive any of the new, fully equipped BMW models, which have been specially marked with what is described as a "pink modernist map design."
Volunteers may bring family and friends with them for the ride and will be able to sign their names on the Ultimate Drive signature vehicle.
Two fleets of BMWs started off the event on March 9 in Athens, Washington. The fleets have now split up and are in the process of traveling through the nation, stopping at various BMW dealerships along the way. The final stop will be on October 20 in Phoenix, Arizona.
While traveling through New Jersey, one of the fleets will be stopping at nine BMW dealerships: BMW of Turnerswille, DeSimone BMW, Ltd. located in Mt. Laurel, Flemington BMW, Hunterdon BMW, Princeton BMW, Paul Miller BMW located in Wayne, Park Avenue BMW located in Maywood, DiFeo BMW located in Tenafly and Prestige BMW located in Ramsey.
BMW and Susan G. Komen for the Cure see this as a way to bring the community together to help out in a common cause.
"The collaboration between Susan G. Komen for the Cure and BMW first began in 1997, and as we reach our 25th anniversary, we wish to raise more money and awareness for our cause," said Susan G. Komen for the Cure representative Julie Sampson.
