Gov. James E. McGreevey established a video Lottery Study Commission to examine the economic and legal effects of video lottery terminals, and their revenue generation potential.
The administration hopes the commission may have a positive impact on the current New Jersey economy, which is in need of a boost from its current recession.
"The Video Lottery Study Commission will examine the legal, economic and policy issues surrounding the video lotteries and provide a through and extensive review of its implications in the states of New Jersey," McGreevey said in a statement prepared by his office.
The commission will report its findings within the first 90 days of its establishment, at which time the commission will issue a recommendation to the governor.
The committee includes state attorney general Peter Harvey, CEO of the N.J. Sports and Exposition Authority George Zoffinger, Chairwoman of the Casino Control Commission Eileen Petersen, President of Montclair State University Susan Cole, Mayor of Elizabeth Chris Bollwage, Director of the New Jersey chapter of AARP James Dieterle, and Assemblyman and Professor at Seton Hall University Wilfredo Caraballo. Former governor of New Jersey Brendon T. Byrne will chair the committee.
Upon the committees' establishment, five citizens appointed by the governor will serve on the committee as public members.
The implementation of video lottery machines could generate new state revenue according to the statement. Currently, the state government of New Jersey is researching several ways to increase revenue and lower its deficit.
