RU?falls in first round at Huskies
The first round of the Big East Tournament was also the last for the Rutgers women’s soccer team.
After rallying to go 4-0-1 in their final five conference games and securing a spot in the tournament, the Scarlet Knights dropped their only match, a 3-1 decision on the road against Connecticut.
Rutgers (12-7-1, 5-6-1) came within one goal of the lead for 20 minutes after senior midfielder Maura McLaughlin netted a goal in the 61st minute, the Knights’ only form of offense off of an assist from junior forward Jonelle Filigno.
But UConn (9-7-2, 5-5-1) midfielder Riley Houle put the Huskies back up by two scores with a goal of her own in the 81st minute.
The Huskies wasted little time jumping into the lead when Linda Rachel struck to give the team an early edge in the 13th minute.
Defender Gabrielle Charno followed that up with a goal 18 minutes later, and the Knights could not recover.
Filigno, Rutgers’ offensive leader with 14 goals the season, turned in an uncharacteristic performance with only one shot — none on goal.
