Rutgers student thwarts Easton Avenue robbery


A Rutgers student foiled an armed robbery at the Amsterdam Smoke Shop at 29 Easton Ave. at about 6:50 p.m. Wednesday, according to a crime alert issued by the Rutgers University Police Department.

“In this incident the victim … reported that she was managing the store when a male entered and, after inquiring about a purchase, displayed a handgun and demanded cash. The victim refused and the male then fled in an unknown direction,” police said in the crime alert.

The victim was not physically injured.

“The perpetrator was described as a tall black male, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, green vest, red undershirt, blue jeans, and a red American flag bandana covering his face,” according to the alert.

The New Brunswick Police Department’s investigation of the attempted robbery is ongoing.

Police recommend that people report suspicious activity immediately and remain alert of their surroundings to reduce their chance of becoming a victim.
