Obama's socialist policies cripple America

The United States of America has come to a significant turning point, and what happens in this president’s term, without any doubt, has the potential to change the very fiber of the land of the free. President Barack Obama’s administration and Congress are stepping up their secular progressive efforts — government-owned corporations, government-owned health care, redistribution of wealth, increased taxes, more social programs, etc. — with the ultimate goal of terminating this capitalist society and establishing a socialistic state. They would like nothing more than to empower the government to coddle each and every one of its citizens from birth to death, taking away innate initiative and incentive to work. Those are definite. The only variable is the people; only you have the power to make sure this crippling end never comes about.

On the note of socialism, there are actually known uber-leftists in places of power, and it’s a mystery how they ever got there. Glenn Beck recently exposed the hidden truths of Obama’s czars: advisers who are accountable to no one and are hand-chosen by the president. There are 16 of these unelected people who control trillions of taxpayer dollars, more than any previous president. Obama appointed many czars even though there are Senate-confirmed secretaries of the 15 cabinet departments that have the Constitutionally-approved powers to oversee these specific areas. For example, Nancy-Ann DeParle acts as Obama’s “health czar,” even though Kathleen Sebelius already serves as America’s Health and Human Services secretary. Obama also has a “border czar” even though we have long had a secretary of homeland security. The secretaries are accountable for their actions, and there are checks and balances that keep the secretaries’ power under control; there exists nothing to check the power of the czars. The president’s “green jobs czar,” Van Jones, is a self-described revolutionary and has the ear of the president. He, and others like him, pose a major threat to this country’s capitalist foundation, and we as citizens can do nothing to remove him or any other czar because they hold no official office. This is absurd.

We can, however, remove our own elected representatives from office, and some of them we should. How is it possible that almost every single Democratic senator is in favor of H.R. 3200 — the bill that would create a government-owned, taxpayer-funded health care — while every Republican senator is resistant to it? It was my understanding that our congressmen and senators are obligated to represent the views of their constituents. Some legislators have held town-hall meetings as a forum for citizens to share their views on the bill. When the citizens did show up and voice with zealousness that they are vehemently opposed to it, the sanctimonious legislators chose blatantly to ignore their constituents’ views in order to promote their own personal agendas. To be fair, there are probably some districts in which the majority of people approve of the health care bill, and those representatives are doing their jobs, as they should. But the problem is that there is a violent push to pass this bill quickly, which is a conspicuous indicator of major problems. At least some congressmen are stalling the bill so they might at least be able to read the whole thing. With respect to the bill itself, I’ve never seen something so clearly socialist in essence get so much attention. There are many issues associated with this health bill, but in a nutshell it’s just steroids for already enormous government control of what should be left to free enterprise.

Here’s the deal, readers. Our country is under siege. Our president, most of Congress and radical revolutionaries in high positions of power want to scrap our 220 year old Constitution, our backbone, our document of supreme law that the Founding Fathers so delicately, meticulously and perfectly crafted, for a secular progressive, neo-European-esque socialist doctrine. There has never been such a well-planned, cunning, coordinated attack on this country’s values and history. If you value your liberty, your opportunity to pursue wealth and happiness and all your other rights guaranteed by the Constitution, you cannot be passive and you cannot be complacent. Whether you realize it or not, your freedoms and your way of life could vanish in the next half decade. You must spread the word to awaken the sleeping giant that is America’s hard-working, conservative populace. As Robert H. Jackson said, “It is not the function of our Government to keep the citizen from falling into error; it is the function of the citizen to keep the Government from falling into error.”

You people have all the answers all the time. but the only real answer is that it is either focused on democratic thinking or republican thinking, and neither make sense The only things ever discussed who`s right or wrong, who`, racists, change or no change, and the same ole bull shi%.But your opinions mean nothing.Whats going to happen in the future will happen no matter what you decide or is right or wrong. You all and me too, are wasting our time. We couldn`t do any thing about it anyway. So sit back and enjoy the new Obama ride. Oh,I might add, that this will be one ride that I will throw up on.

Its sad that a solid assessment of our nation is not from the New York Times, or CNN, or NBC, or The Washington Post, its from a sophomore from Rutgers University. The left has always been against Government Control, but that's only when the GOP is in charge. All rules go out the window when their party sits in charge, of the House, the Senate and the Executive Branch. For all those who yelped about the Constitution being abused under Bush, and now sit still, simply reconfirms my thoughts that you have no understanding of what the Constitution is, or what is says. Its a document that is easy to read, and it not meant to be "uber" flexible, its not to be living and morphed every 4-8 years, its the bastion of what this nation stands for, or did stand for. Obama has gone beyond his acceptable powers, and sadly, Bush did too with some of the Bail-Outs, but what was a trickle prior, is now a mighty raging flood staged river. The Czars, the deal to protect the auto unions in regards to Detroit (Was announced this week that neither auto company will be able to repay the billions, it was a loan, yet, aside from an article in the WSJ, where is the media?) We were promised this money back, Obama said so! Yet, another empty promise concerning our tax dollars. Where was I, promising transparency, yet pushing through 1,000 page bills costing hundreds of billions, that no one read! How insane is this? This man promised to be bipartisan and we see the greatest divid in 100 years.

The author is on target and has guts, since most college kids have no concept of the constitution, their politics come from media elite sound bite machines, MTV and Rock the Vote. A suggestion to those who don't like this assessment, dig a bit, read the constitution, and remember, it was not socialism that made this nation the greatest modern nation on the face of the earth, it was capitalism and the Constitution. You may enjoy kicking this nation for what it stands for, because its hip and cool, take a look at other nations, a real look before you start with comparisons. Heard just this week about how great Spain is with its healthcare program. You read the article and think way, how insightful those socialist europeans, but they don't bother to tell you that the nation is at 18.5% unemployment and their prospects are beyond sad. Socialism does not work, never has-and once you run out of other's money, you have nothing, but a massive empty infrastructure with the masses waiting for their hand out.

Wanting to improve health care is scrapping the Constitution and putting us "under seige?" A little dramatic, no? Put down the Rush Limbaugh Kool-Aid before you choke on it.

What you're hearing about Socialized Healthcare and "Death Panels" is seriously a rumor started by right-wing health care lobbyists. The health care reform proposes no such thing. All the whining you people do about health care reform... what is your alternative? What would you have us do, just do nothing and watch MORE people lose health care. The system MUST be reformed to make costs lower and reign in insurance companies. But to equate reform with socialism shows just how backward you are.

Government owned corporations? I suppose you'd just like to give tens of billions to corporations who say, "Just give us the bailout money and leave us alone. We know what we're doing. Trust us." These so-called "government owned corporations" are the very people who GOT us in this mess. Newsflash: You want public money, you have to deal with public ownership. We TRIED it your way, and YOU FAILED!

Great Op-Ed. Nelson Morales may want to consider joining this conservative party. He suggests one look at Western Europe. Capitalism? Hardly, the tax rate there is more like that of a Socialist government. The marginal tax rate in Great Britain will be over 50% next year for those making over 150,000 pounds per year. In Austria the rate is about 50%, Italy is about 52%, France is about 50%, Germany is 49%, Denmark is about 60%, the Netherlands is 52%, and Belgium is 52%.

Where is the incentive to invest in research or entrepreneurship?

I never pick up a physical copy of the Targum anymore because it is dull and repetitive, but I enjoyed this. It was amusing. My only complaint is that you seem to have forgotten the "Obama wasn't born in the U.S." talking point, but other than that this was a masterpiece. Perhaps next time you should also include the word communist or fascist, at least once!

Sorry to break this little "conservative" party but, personally, I feel that this "scare" of Obama so-called "Socializing" America is just BS. Take a good look at Western Europe. Capitalist yes, but some countries actually have some form of socialism in place and it's not being crippled. Look at the UK, they're just like us in almost everything, yet they have a free health care system that's better than what we have here (and plenty of people support it well). Its funny when Fox News, the republican Pravda, shoves lies and spreads its manifesto to distort the people, damages their own party, and basically dumbs down the American public. Where did all the "protests" for the town hall meetings occur? Where did the idea of the "Tea-Bag" protests begin? Where did the accusation that Obama wasn't born in America begin? All created on Fox News to purposely make Obama look bad in order for a republican to win in 2012 and restore what they believe is America because they are still pissed that McCain lost the 2008 election (then again, this opinion, smells like Fox News propaganda). For America to move forward, we need to change and if that involves a different way of government, then it has to unless you want America to stay years and years behind while the rest of the world is years ahead (that includes third world countries developing into industrialized nations) and laughing at us.

Wow, hyperbole much? Our constitution is falling apart because of public health care? I can counter you on this in about 10 ways, but Bill Ford rightly pointed out that public health care was being debated in the early 1900s, it's nothing new.

Also, FYI- never expect to be taken seriously when your appeal to authority includes Glen Beck. It would be like liberals quoting kermit the frog, it's meaningless.

But really my problem with this piece is how it jumps from health care to an entirely socialist state where people have "lost the incentive to work". Yes, that's correct, now that poorer Americans can get health care they will decide to skip out on work, good call.

And "czars", what a scary prospect! Why would we want bright individuals with expertise in their fields serving an advisory role to help improve our country? Clearly they will only use this position for pure, utter evil. Thank you for this illuminating insight.

Very good discussion all the way around. I like the op-ed piece very much. It is rooted in the facts that are of a clear and present danger. I also like the main opposing argument that the right - left paradigm is a shell game. It is, but right now it is about moving everything in a direction back to our foundation and the best way for us to make an immediate impact is to vote every incumbent out of office... Dems and Reps. Start over with some new blood and make it clear we want our gov't to represent the American person again. This op-ed whether you agree that it is far reaching enough or not is solid and is a good intro to people that do not realize that there is a serious situation that threatens the American way of life FOR REAL!

Smart young man who has his head on straight. What a refreshing change to the usual college essays I've read.

Thank you for sharing this.

As an alumni, I also am pleased to see a rational and realistic assessment of the policies of B.O. When I attended Rutgers Engineering in the early 1990s, the Daily Targum seemed to exclusively print only leftist views. Leftists often object to the authoritarian ways of the right vis-a-vis restrictive social policies. Rightists now object to the authoritarian ways of the left vis-a-vis restrictive fiscal policies. Perhaps we should all just simply collectively object to authoritarian forms of government. Is it right that you should be forced to pay for someone else's cause?

We live in a Constitutional Republic, not a pure Democracy. In such a republic where life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are valued, the President and our elected representatives swear an oath to uphold an protect it's citizens against the tyranny of government and a majority, i.e. our Constitution and Bill of Rights. Questioning whether or not B.O. and our representatives are breaking the law by violating this oath, is an obligation of citizens when Federal tyranny and even mob rule is the status quo.

Thanks Jimmy. Nice to see some conservatives actually do exist at Rutgers. Hopefully there are more. For those who still support the socialist in the White House, do a little homework on who Barry has advising him. Start with Van Jones, or Mark Lloyd. The majority of Americans were snookered last November by a true Manchurian candidate. 2010 is coming quickly. Lets not make the same mistake.

Karl,

Thank you for your perspective. However, I am taken aback by your rude ad hominems. This is an opinion; it says so all over this page. I'm sorry you feel the greatest nation on the planet isn't good enough for you. I'm just trying to make people aware that it could be radically changed by the current government. It is clear that you would much favor anarchy, which is even more clearly a ludicrous notion. I don't think you will succeed in dismantling our current democratic republic, but good luck anyway.

Well it's good to see some young people having such a great conversation. There have been some comments made in here concerning no difference between the left and right. I would agree. For the most part, being that they are all selfish and looking out for me, me, me and not us. Although, that being said, there is a slight difference among some of them. But they are so few, they are not being heard. As for the Czars topic, surely all of you well educated folks in here do realize and understand that they the Czars and the act of assigning such positions is unconstitutional? This act falls under what is known as "EO" Executive Order. Yes there have been a few Presidents through out the years that have had such people in there administration. But never in the double digits, as Obama has. Bush had I believe 3, Clinton 2 or 3, the first Bush had 3 and even Ronald Reagan had 1 or 2. Lets talk about Roosevelt since he was mentioned in this conversation. Now there was the King Leader of his day. He was and until Obama remained the most Progressive ever to hold the office of the President. This man was so unconstitutional in the things he did, that he should have been arrested for treason. But the people let him get away with many things they might not normally would have let him do. All in the name of war. The President originally had the power of EO among his administration only. He could not and still can not constitutionally make law that will effect the people. His EO's should not reach beyond the confines of the White House. Everything from Federal land preserves and Parks, to Health Care, Bicycle helmets and seat belts are all unconstitutional. Make no Mistake, Obama isn't the first one to do things, but he shouldn't by any means or reason be doing what he is. Obama, along with President Roosevelt, are the two largest usurpers of Constitutional law that this country has ever witnessed. The only difference that sets the two of them apart is that, one was at the almost very beginning of the leaning to the left. The other one is trying to finish it off. Make no mistake about the face of the country getting ready for a change. But it won't be the change Obama, Pelosi, Reid and the rest of the White House figured on. First reason is that there are not enough people like minded to get the nation to go in the direction of Fascism, Socialism or any other sort of ism. Oh yes this country has had a slow creep in this direction for the past 70 years but, thanks to Obama, the people have awoken. With our persistence, we could very well go down in history, as the second best generation reared by this country. But it will be a lot of hard long work. We need to vote almost every person out of office. Stay vigilant with anyone new and find our way back to the most basics of a Constitutional Government. Thank you for allowing me to say my piece and to all of you, Good Luck in life's ventures!

Karl M---what does that stand for Karl Marx?

While I agree there are problems on both the right and the left, I don't feel it is right to attack the messenger. Whether it be Jimmy, Glenn Beck or Fox News. Which one of you brain surgeons can tell me why this information isn't even on NBC, MSNBC, ABC, CBS? Is it not news that a person advising the president is a self-described Communist? The current administration is all that is important at this moment in time. We cannot change the past. However, we must change the future, if not we will wake up one day and find our country gone.

Alex makes a point that deals a death-blow to this ill-conceived Op-Ed. Actually, he delivers two: that the author's argument on czars is fatally flawed; and that the left-right paradigm is a shell game. I'd be interested to read Mr. Winters's response.

Sure, fiscal responsibility is crucial. But this Op-Ed is grim (my guess is that the Tar Gum only published to offer a token "conservative" point of view that made the author look like a child, thus discrediting a Republican point of view?). I didn't vote for Obama. I didn't vote for McCain.

Our best way to move forward is to tackle the idea of the Federal system--that's the real culprit here. There isn't much difference between right and left except where they choose to oppress us, whether by their foreign wars and military-industrial complex, awful socialized medicine, absurd social legislation (legalize drugs and establish marriage equality NOW) etc...

Nice try, Jimbo. But you should head "back to the drawing board" with your argument--being an engineering student and not a writer, you ought to know that phrase.
