Stop campaigning, start improving

It has been two weeks since Election Day. While most New Brunswick residents were hoping that the battle between wards and the at-large system of government would be over, Empower Our Neighborhoods, the group campaigning in favor of wards, is far from done with the fight. It might be time to throw in the towel and come up with new ideas to better the city.
Final results of the election were not released until Nov. 7, four days after the election, due to a number of provisional ballots that needed to be counted. The results depicted a close race, with the anti-wards votes succeeding pro-wards votes by 82 votes, according to a unofficial voting results There were 2,474 “no” votes versus 2,392 “yes” votes. EON is petitioning for a recount. There were a lot of issues for students at the voting stations. Many were told they could not vote because of issues with voter registrations, and many provisional ballots had to be filled out. But still, no matter if the election was lost by a landslide or lost by a small margin, losing is still losing.
Students and residents alike were getting tired of hearing about the issue while the campaign was going on. While they have every right to ask for a recount, pushing the wards matter further will only annoy people more and turn people off from civic engagement. They should, instead of using up more time and money on something that cannot be fixed, work to now utilize the current system of government. They should try to work better with the city council. They should also stop worrying so much about politics and about the entire city as a whole. Community projects and service could be beneficial to everyone living in New Brunswick, and EON should use their resources to help others and not just themselves. Trying to fight the election result any more would just be beating a dead horse. Accept the fact that the at-large system is here to stay and change your attitude about changing things completely. There should be work on one thing at a time. Maybe just a change in attitude and the way the current city-council is handled now will give the most change, and satisfy at least a few more people with the way things are run.

This just disappoints me. I hope the targums reporting on the city doesn't go back to being Bill Brays Press releases now.

Its not even the fact that it doesn't inform people of the truth that I most hate.....

ITS JUST FLAT OUT BORING

When EON had video of someone stealing a sign they put it on the web. Voting irregularities? People denied the right to vote? Sounds a lot like the Bush administration's claims about Clinton staff trashing the White House. If EON has people who were denied the right to vote present them. Stop making claims and start making your case. I don't think you can because you have no case, no evidence. Moxietoday had a video up within hours after the county stopped your illegal messengers. Where is your video now? If someone was told they could not vote why didn't they go to one of the US Attorney's who were in town at student polling stations monitoring the vote. Why didn't they go to one of your challengers? Why didn't they go to one of your volunteers. Why didn't they go to Martin Perez or his wife, both attorneys. Because they don't exists. YOU LOST. Tough but true.

This editorial is simply illogical. If there are claims of voting irregularities and/or illegal denial of the vote to citizens, it should very well be the position of the Daily Targum to advocate for every vote, and voter, to be counted, and for any impropriety to be addressed. Instead, the Targum adopts an "Oh well, I guess lets just forget about it" attitude.

Editors, you've displayed your deep naivete and fundamental misunderstanding of what this election has been about. The political machine that's been running New Brunswick has never been so close to losing its One Party Town status. Blaming the agents for Actual democracy for demanding fairness and justice just doesn't make sense. You have betrayed your ignorance about grassroots democratic engagement, and youve had plenty of time to learn about it.

You can do a lot better. So do it.

This election was STOLEN through a combination of corruption and incompetence, and no reasonable person who witnessed what took place on election day could claim otherwise. People were illegally denied the right to vote. People were illegally denied provisional ballots. Poll workers illegally told people to vote "no" inside polling stations. The list goes on.

And your response to this is to be critical of the group that is outraged and standing up against the well documented tactics of a corrupt political machine??

This is ridiculous. I am so proud of all of the students and community members who are still working and not giving up on what they believe in. It's not about drawing something out. It's about fighting for what is right and in the truth. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank all the people who are still working hard! Don't stop! Keep fighting!

What are you talking about? only 14 percent of people on your own website's poll said "I’m glad it’s over. I’m tired of the campaigning"

Hey Targum,
When did Ben Bucca and Bill Bray start writing your editorials?
"pushing the wards matter further will only annoy people more and turn people off from civic engagement. " Really, can you back up this claim? "instead of using up more time and money on something that cannot be fixed" Cannot be fixed? You mean we can't make elections run smoother? The numerous people who were DENIED a PROVISIONAL BALLOT shouldn't complain that their fundamental right to vote was taken from them?
"They should also stop worrying so much about politics and about the entire city as a whole" WOW! And you said EON was turning people off from civic engagement. Go ahead, encourage the students to shrink back behind the wall the city has created b/w the Students and the Community at-large.
This is not the quality writing that I have come to expect from the Targum. It lacks both Validity and Soundness. and because it encourages students to detach from the issues surrounding them it should be condemned.

Wow, way to take back the endorsement to get a ward system in New Brunswick. Well, editorial board not everyone is so quite to take this as a defeat. Everyone who has been fighting for wards did so because it was the only way to effectively change the way things are done in the city. There is no dealing with the current city administration when they try to steal an election. They tried to lie about everything up to the election, so it wouldn't be so far fetched that they would cheat as well.

I guess supporting some of your fellow students who have worked so hard on this for no money doesn't seem as newsworthy when it looks like nothing has changed. Why don't you as reporters ask not just the students but the residents to see how they feel about how the election went and how it's changed things.

You as a newspaper should commend the Coalition fighting for integrity and honesty especially during an election. Shame on you, editorial board.
