Engineers are adding a new skill to their set: art. A movement known as “STEAM,” a combination of Science Technology, Engineering and Math and Arts, has taken hold of Rutgers Engineering. The movement has been gaining traction over the last decade, according to the national STEM to STEAM group.
An insect research lab team led by Jessica Ware, an assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Rutgers-Newark, discovered a winter-resistant cockroach last December that was thought to be extinct. Ware said the Japanese cockroach, which was found in New York, might have migrated from its native habitat in Japan to the United States via trade and human travel, as most insect species do.
Different regions of the world offer different solutions to a shared problem. Few programs take advantage of this phenomenon, but Rutgers strives to live up to its motto by involving their graduate students in global interdisciplinary research. The Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship program, founded in 1998, is a national, interdisciplinary graduate program funded by the National Science Foundation for different 5-year research project concentrations on relevant issues in society.
Nine School of Engineering students brought their first-hand experiences of internships to Rutgers last Monday at the first “Interns Present” competition. It was a competition that pooled the best of more than 25 applicants to give 8-minute presentations to win prizes and relay internship advice and impressions to undergraduates, faculty and professionals.
A research team led by Yair Rosenthal, a professor in the Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences, came back from the Pacific Ocean with startling news.“The ocean is warming fast, and we’re not sure why,” Rosenthal said. The team’s research spans 10 years and suggests the ocean’s rate of heat gain, as recorded in the last 60 years, is 15 times greater than any that natural warming has shown in the last 10,000 years, said Braddock Linsley, a research professor at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University.
