Things have not gone according to plan for Anjelica Brinkofski during her short time on the Banks.
The highly touted freshman would’ve already competed in two meets as a member of the Rutgers women’s cross country team had it not been for eligibility matters.
As a result of high school transcript issues, Brinkofski wasn’t cleared to participate in any team activities over the past four weeks, forcing her to train separate from the rest of the squad.
But yesterday morning the NCAA Clearinghouse confirmed Brinkofski’s eligibility and within hours she took part in her first official practice as a Scarlet Knight.
“I’m very happy to get out there with the team,” she said. “It’s been tough to watch them compete without me.”
Last year, Brinkofski starred as a senior at Bishop George Ahr High School in Edison, N.J., earning third-team All-State honors.
She is arguably the Knights’ most significant addition this season. Her debut will be this Friday at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa.
Head coach James Robinson is excited to finally have Brinkofski in the fold.
“She’ll certainly add depth and talent,” said Robinson whose team finished 10th in a 21 team field last week at the Br. John “Paddy” Doyle/Iona College Meet of Champions. “She can help us as a top runner.”
The race Friday not only is Brinkofski’s first as a Knight, it is also her first attempt at a 6k (3.75 mile) race.
Despite competing at 5k races at the high school level, Brinkofski does not lack confidence. After playing the waiting game for nearly a month, she’s finally off and running.
“My feelings are the longer the distance, the better it is for me,” she said. “I think I’ll be fine. I’m excited and ready to get to work.”
