The Rutgers University Police Department (RUPD) is currently investigating a burglary that occurred on Tuesday night between 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., according to a University-wide email alert.

The incident commenced when a Rutgers-affiliated individual encountered the male perpetrator at the intersection of College Avenue and Hamilton Street near the College Avenue campus.

First, the perpetrator offered the individual candy in exchange for cash and later used the individual’s phone to complete a digital transaction of the requested payment, according to the email alert.

Subsequently, the perpetrator intimidated the individual into presenting them with additional material items from the latter's residence on the Livingston campus. The individual was not injured during the burglary.

It is unclear as to how the perpetrator left the scene, but the RUPD described them as a stocky, Black male, standing at approximately 6-foot-2.

They were reported to be wearing a black sweatshirt, a black hooded sweatshirt with white stripes and a black ski mask at the time of the incident, according to the email alert.

The RUPD said that anyone who has information about this burglary should contact the RUPD’s Detective Bureau.

In addition, the RUPD said members of the University community should take reasonable precautions while traveling at night such as walking in groups, avoiding isolated areas and remaining aware of their surroundings.
