Senior goalkeeper remains one of lone bright spots in difficult season for Rutgers

When David Greczek first stepped foot in Piscataway, he knew it was where he wanted to spend his collegiate years playing the game he loves for the Rutgers men's soccer team. “When I went through the committing process and I came to Rutgers and I saw the campus, the coaching staff, the players (and) the facilities, I was just mesmerized by it," he said. "I thought it was a great fit to come here.

Junior forward Jason Wright scored a goal and assisted another in Rutgers’ first win of the season, a 3-2 victory over Bradley in its regular season finale Saturday. Wright leads the Knights with 6 on the season.

Rutgers earns first win in regular season finale

In a game where the Rutgers men’s soccer team trailed early and was tied up for some time and was outshot 22 to 11, the Scarlet Knights escaped Peoria, Illinois, with their first win of the season. “It was our last chance to get the win that we’ve so badly been wanting,” said head coach Dan Donigan. Rutgers (1-13-2, 0-6-2) continued its trend of allowing early goals by giving one up in the sixth minute.

Despite being winless through its first nine games, junior forward Ryan Peterson said the Rutgers men's soccer team won’t throw in the towel on its season.

Knights host Michigan team facing similar struggles this season

The previous 4 out of 5 Rutgers men’s soccer games have either been a tie or a loss by only a one-goal difference. Those games include a 2-1 double-overtime loss to No. 1 Maryland, a scoreless tie against No. 6 Indiana, a heartbreaking 6-5 loss to No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast and a 1-0 loss to Wisconsin. But closely contested games don’t count as wins and the Scarlet Knights find themselves in the basement of the Big Ten Conference.  One team that is close to Rutgers in the standings is Michigan, but it also does not sport a record that shows how close its contests have been.

Junior centerback Niel Guzman scored Rutgers' only goal in a 3-1 loss to Ohio State in Columbus Sunday.

Rutgers falls to Ohio State in Columbus

The Rutgers men’s soccer team fell to 0-6 on the season following a 3-1 loss to Ohio State on Sunday. The Buckeyes (2-5) scored in the fifth minute to put the Scarlet Knights in a hole. From there, it was all Ohio State, as it padded its early lead to 2-0 heading into halftime. “I don’t know what the answer is,” said head coach Dan Donigan.
