Hoverboards explode due to faulty batteries

In an email sent to all Rutgers University students last month, the Department of Emergency Services issued a temporary ban on all “hoverboards," according to The Daily Targum.  These hoverboards, which are described in the email as “hands-free segways," have recently been in the news for exploding and catching fire in dramatic fashion. Many believe the cause for these explosions reside in the lithium-ion batteries that power the hoverboards.

Global climate change is the “most urgent, number one” issue facing humanity today, Bill Nye said in an interview on Crossfire. Rutgers engineering students present findings at second annual research fair

On Tuesday, research groups from all over the School of Engineering arrived at the Busch Campus Center to display their work. The Second Annual Research Fair, hosted by the Society of Women Engineers and Sigma Phi Delta, helped exhibit the research that Rutgers is doing, as well as allow students to network with professors and graduate students from many departments. Samantha Murray, a senior in the School of Arts and Sciences, is in a research position at Materials Science and Engineering.

Students discuss experiences at Interns Present

More than 85 percent of students who have internships receive two job offers after graduation, according to a sign in the Busch Student Center’s University Career Services window. As part of National Engineers Week, several School of Engineering students described their internship experiences for the 2nd Annual Interns Present competition. Interns’ presentations were judged on a basic rubric, said Kevin Bailey, the Vice President of Regeneron Pharmaceuticals.

ALS drug shows promise in treating melanoma

Nearly 76,000 people were diagnosed with melanoma in 2014, according to the National Cancer Institute website. Suzie Chen, a professor in the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, uses mouse models to study how melanoma progresses from its initiation to the possibility of metastasis, or the spread of a cancer or disease to another organ not directly connected to the cancer or disease. They then move from mouse models to human cell cultures in an effort to gain knowledge to use for human patients, she said.
