Just as its conference slate comes into full swing, the Rutgers men's basketball team has suffered a tough loss.

Senior guard and team captain Mike Williams will miss an undetermined amount of time with an ankle injury,  sources told the Daily Targum.

The news was first reported on Sunday evening by Jerry Carino of the Asbury Park Press.

Williams, a Brooklyn, N.Y. native, was in his final year of eligibility with the Scarlet Knights.

The Daily Targum learned that Williams suffered the injury while going up for a layup in practice on Saturday morning.

Williams had been averaging 9.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game coming off the bench and was shooting a career-high 40 percent from the field.

He made his mark for the Scarlet Knights as an undersized but hard working-guard who out-hustled everyone else on the floor. He is described in his team biography as "a tenacious defender and a tireless competitor who strengthens the backcourt with his playmaking ability."

Williams also achieved a career milestone this season, scoring his 1000th career point against Stony Brook.
