Three Rutgers buses fail state inspection, forced out of service

Buses 4210, 4131 and 202, all of which operate for the Rutgers bus system, failed safety inspections by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) last month, according to a statement from the University to The Daily Targum.

All 85 buses in the Rutgers fleet are required to be inspected annually by the NJDOT. Additionally, First Transit, the operator of the University bus system, performs a self-inspection of its fleet every six months and makes repairs as necessary, according to the statement.

Many factors impact how long a bus remains out of service after failing an inspection, including the extent of repair the vehicle needs, according to the statement.

Communication between Rutgers—New Brunswick officials and First Transit occur daily regarding the availability of buses and any issues with the fleet. Anyone can report issues they encounter with the buses to the Rutgers Department of Transportation Services on its website.
