Head coach Greg Schiano of the Rutgers football team will remain at the helm of the Scarlet Knights for seven more seasons after signing a contract extension through the 2030 season.

Schiano’s new contract will boost his compensation from $4 million to $6.25 million in 2024.

"I would like to thank President Holloway, Athletic Director Pat Hobbs, the Board of Governors and our entire team for their continued belief in what we are building," Schiano said following his extension. "Rutgers is home to my family and me, and we are blessed to have the opportunity to build a championship program right here in New Jersey."

Schiano was first hired by Rutgers in 2001. During his first stint as the Knights' head coach, Schiano led Rutgers to multiple upset wins against top-ranked teams and five bowl game wins.

Schiano left the Knights after the 2011 season to pursue a head coaching career in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After a few years in the NFL and as Ohio State’s defensive coordinator, Schiano came back to Rutgers in December of 2019.

“I’ve said it before. I made a bit of a bonehead move leaving (in 2011) because I really think we could be in a really sweet spot right now,” Schiano said on Thursday. “But you can’t change life. You make decisions with the information you have at the time.”

Since Schiano’s re-hiring, the Knights have appeared in one bowl game in 2021 and have earned traditional, six-win bowl eligibility this season for the first time since 2014.

"In four years, Coach Schiano has transformed our program, this year resulting in bowl eligibility,” athletic director Pat Hobbs said. “Continuity is critical in building winning programs. We have the right leader and the right staff to lead the Knights in the years ahead."

In those four years, Schiano has established the team’s new slogans: F.A.M.I.L.Y., Trust and Chop, which emphasizes player and cultural development.

Rutgers also extended offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca's and defensive coordinator Joe Harasymiak's contracts through the 2026 season. Ciarrocca's contract was extended for an additional year, and he will make $1.5 million in the final year of his deal. Harasymiak will now make $1.25 million through the 2025 season before getting his salary raised to $1.5 million for the 2026 season.

“We have, in my opinion, the best coordinators in the country. I have total faith in them. They do an unbelievable job. It allows me to do my job,” Schiano said of Ciarrocca and Harasymiak. “It really is a pleasure to work with them and they lead their staffs in a way that excites me.”

Schiano is looking forward to ending his coaching career on the Banks.

“I am thrilled to be here, and I’m thrilled to know that this is where I’m going to be coaching,” Schiano said. “I’m not getting younger, so this will be it for me and it’s fun. I love that.”
