ABDELFATAH: United States needs clear strategy regarding Syria

Two Fridays ago President Donald J. Trump ordered a missile strike against the Syrian government for a chemical weapons attack against its own people. The strikes, intended to both punish the Syrian government for the attack and to deter them from using such weapons in the future, targeted weapons research and storage facilities. These strikes, though, accomplished little and despite having taken action the president maintained that he wanted the U.S. to get out of Syria.

ABDELFATAH: Pompeo, Bolton indicate direction of U.S. foreign policy

Over the past two weeks, there have been important shakeups in President Donald J. Trump's administration’s national security team. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will be replaced by former Congressman and CIA Director Mike Pompeo and Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, the national security advisor, was replaced by John Bolton, who is expected to begin on April 9. The changes to these two key positions likely reflects important changes in the direction of America’s foreign policy.

ABDELFATAH: Russian interference is attack on democracy

It has long been a widely accepted fact that the Russian government purposely interfered in the 2016 elections as well as democratic elections in other countries, such as France. This Friday the Justice Department officially charged thirteen Russians and three companies of attempting to subvert the 2016 elections in favor of the Trump campaign. Interfering in democratic elections is one of the more dangerous soft-power tools that the Kremlin has, and is an issue that America and its allies must not fail to address.
