Yesterday, a grand jury in New York indicted former U.S. President Donald J. Trump on criminal charges, according to an article from the Associated Press.

Trump's charges, which are not known at this time, stemmed from an investigation concerning payments he made to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal prior to the 2016 presidential election.

The investigation was conducted by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who released a brief statement on Twitter that confirmed the indictment and said the specific charges remain sealed by the court.

This ruling by the grand jury marks the first time in history that any U.S. president has been charged with a criminal indictment. Shortly after the news broke, Trump released a statement on Truth Social that said the indictment was politically charged and an example of election tampering by Democrats.

"He did not commit any crime. We will vigorously fight this political prosecution in court," Joseph Tacopina, one of Trump's defense lawyers, told the Associated Press.

Trump is expected to appear at the New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan on Tuesday for arraignment, according to the New York Times.

Trump is currently facing potential criminal charges in two other unrelated cases — one by a special counsel on the federal level and one on the state level in Georgia, according to the Reuters article.
